Benefit: What do to When Encountering Narrations that Mention the Messenger...

In the Name of Allaah, Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem...

What do to when encoutering narrations that mention the messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) without the statement "sallaallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam" after reference to him (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

[Q]: We were hoping that we could perhaps be given a little direction in this query,Allaahu yubaarik feek. Recently in our hifdh circle,, we came across a hadithwhere the narrator mentions the messenger of Allaah,, Sallallaah alaihi wa sallam, however the the salutations on the messenger are not mentioned within the hadith by the narrator. The hadith is below:

Hadeeth 21, Imaaam Annawawee's 40 ahadeeth.

On the authority of Aboo 'Amr- and he is also known as Aboo 'Amrah Sufyaan ibn 'Abdullaah (radi Allaahu 'An hu) who said: I said, ''Oh Messenger of Allaah, tell me something about Islaam that I cannot ask anyone other than you.'' He said, ''Say, 'i believe in Allaah and then remain steadfast upon that..'' (related by Muslim)

The sisters were unsure how to approach this when memorising, bearing in mind the hadeeth of the messenger where he descends from the pulpit saying ameen on three ocassions, one being in response to Jibra'eel rebuking (may his nose be rubbed/covered in dust) the one who does not send salutations on the messenger when he is mentioned.

We were wondering do we send salutations on the prophet when being tested in recalling the hadeeth, or do we memorise the hadeeth as it is; verbatim?

Baarakaallaahu feeka

[A]: Read the text out loud as is, do not add anything, and say "sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam" silently to yourself. This is what my shaykh, Muhammad 'Umar Baazmool (may Allaah preserve him) does when he recites khutbah al-haajah intending to recite it verbatim as a text. he pauses and says sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam under his breath when he gets to wa anna muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluhu.

And Allaah knows best.
